Coastal Marine Park

La Ceiba, Honduras

1

This Coastal Marine Park project in La Ceiba, Hondruras, has two main functions: in the first place it is a line of defense for the beach, which has been deteriorating as a result of the systematic mineral extraction from the principal river basin of the locality, which has significantly altered the profile of the ocean floor at the river mouth and in turn generated currents which have steadfastly washed exceedingly large amounts of beach sand out to sea.

In the second place the project is an extensive civic space where people can meet and interact in the context of a complex of sports, cultural, institutional and commercial facilities dispersed on a waterfront levee. This new levee, approximately 2kms in length and fifty meters in width, aspires to be a physical representation of the collective memory of the community and its historic relationship to nature.

The project consists of a series of jetties which are located perpendicular to the coast in order to counteract the sand washout by forcing sand build up on the side of the jetties opposite the direction of coastal currents. Aside from their principal function of beach stabilization, these jetties are accessible to the public, facilitating recreational activities such as fishing, boating or swimming.

Within the levee area behind this line of defense a network of pedestrian and cycling paths provides the structure for a series of public facilities, including gardens, kiosks, reflecting pools, public baths and restrooms, illuminated fountains and amphitheatres. These elements have been designed on the basis of construction technologies commonly used in Honduras so as to ensure the participation of local firms and artisans in the construction of this community space.

Among its responsibilities as architects and planners, ESSA was charged with the development of a Land Use Plan for the area known as the “Zona Viva” which recognizes and values the levee development area and private property contiguous to it. The study area includes the coastal sector of the city contiguous to the new marine park and the plan defines urban design guidelines and zoning regulations to be employed in the development of the project.
