Chateau Lynch Bages and Michel Lynch
Storage Facility

Pauillac, France

1

“A few years ago a very ugly warehouse was still visible. Now a mountain of white metal unfolds here. It is here that the white wine Michel Lynch is bottled and stored. The architecture is congenial to the class of that white Bordeaux and is living proof that warehouses no longer have to be ugly, and that elaborate and conspicuous architecture can blend in with the lovely Medoc scenery.”

Simultaneously with our work at Chateau Pichon Longueville, we were invited by the owner of Chateau Lynch Bages and Michel Lynch, Mr. Jean Michel Cazes, to study ways in which we might transform an existing 1960´s era industrial warehouse into an iconic structure more representative of a new sensibility regarding the relationship of architecture and landscape in Bordeaux.

In this project we devised a new folded aluminum panel system with which we enveloped the building, altering in the process its identity and fostering a new relationship between the building and the landscape. These folded and sloped walls in turn augmented considerably the building insulation while creating more usable space within the structure, which was reorganized to meet new programmatic requirements, including a bottling plant and bottle storage for the Michel Lynch winery and garages for the Chateua Lynch Bages farm equipment.
